Every Time Subaru Dies in Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-

If you're familiar with the premise of Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- (hereafter Re:ZERO ), then you're aware that the protagonist, Natsuki Subaru, has a rough time adjusting after he's transported to a magical world with a strange and spooky form of limited reincarnation. Every time Subaru dies, he jumps back to an earlier “save point,” resetting the timeline from his perspective and allowing him to re-live scenarios and attempt to alter their outcome. The process (called Return by Death) is flawed, with Subaru's understanding of the events leading to his deaths limited by what he's able to observe before snuffing it. Even though he invariably revives, he still experiences all of the pain and terror of dying each time. Because only Subaru retains his memories from the now-defunct timelines, and because he's prevented from speaking about this ability by a Witch's curse, Subaru cannot communicate his experiences to his friends, allies and loved ones. Luckily for the viewers, Subaru persists despite the constant threat of death and dismemberment, growing as a person and becoming more nuanced as a character with every incarnation. By the time Re:ZERO season three rolls around, Subaru has conquered much of his self-loathing and grown into a role as Emilia's knight and chief supporter. Although he's no powerhouse on the battlefield, Subaru's quick-thinking approach to problem-solving and ability to keep cool under pressure so far have made him more than a match for Sin Archbishops and Witches alike... although the ability reset to an earlier point in the timeline certainly doesn't hurt. If you'd like a little more Re:ZERO in your life, Crunchyroll currently streams all three seasons of Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- , and Yen Press publishes an English language version of the original Re:ZERO light novels.
