Messages from Kagaya While Tamayo is naturally suspicious of Kagaya Ubuyashiki’s invitation to work together , she considers the crow messenger’s words after it flies away from her windowsill. As she closes the open window, her companion and fellow demon Yushiro bursts into the room. Tamayo tells him she feels something new is in motion now that Nezuko has conquered the sun. She tells him they should get ready to leave the house – to go to Ubuyashiki Mansion, the Demon Slayer Corps headquarters. Kagaya wrote the Demon Slayer to tell him that he longs to speak to Water Hashira Giyu Tomioka, but he’s unable to move from his bed. He asks Tanjiro to talk to the Hashira on his behalf to help get him through his slump, and to be persistent about it. As he reads, Tanjiro agrees with a smile. This Is Complicated Tanjiro gets dressed and prepares to go see Giyu early the next morning. He’s still healing and needs a crutch to get around, but his caretaker Aoi agrees to let him go. Before he departs, Aoi prepares a bag of rice balls to take with him. He thanks her with a big grin because it’s difficult to be grumpy on a full stomach. Tanjiro makes his way to Giyu’s house and calls to him through the closed gate. Giyu offers no response and the gate stays closed. Tanjiro is undeterred and lets himself in. RELATED: Every Breathing Technique in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (So Far) Tanjiro finds Giyu and starts talking his ear off about the Hashira training. He asks Giyu to train him but he immediately declines. He tells Tanjiro that he’s angry the young Demon Slayer didn’t master Water Breathing to become the Water Hashira. Tanjiro apologizes and says that Water Breathing is often used as a starting point for evolving into a new breathing technique, which is what he did. Giyu clarifies that since there isn’t a Water Hashira, someone needs to claim the mantle. Tanjiro is confused – isn’t that Giyu? Persistence Giyu says flatly that he’s not the Water Hashira and tells Tanjiro to go home. Giyu leaves the room and Tanjiro follows, recalling Kagaya’s request to be persistent. He leaves the rice balls at Giyu’s closed door. The next morning, Giyu finally leaves his room and finds Tanjiro sleeping. As he turns and walks away, Tanjiro smiles and follows again. He keeps up a steady stream of chatter in an effort to get Giyu to agree to training. He never passed the Final Selection, the trial to enter the Demon Slayer Corps, he tells Tanjiro. When he was 13 years old, he underwent the test alongside Sabito, a peach-haired boy who was also trained by the same master as Giyu and Tanjiro. Giyu begins telling their tale. Final Selection Giyu and Sabito were the same age when they were students of Urokodaki. Sabito was kind with a strong sense of justice. He was the only one who didn’t make it out of the Final Selection alive. Although he slew a number of demons and saved Giyu’s life, he was killed by a powerful demon in the dark forest during the trial. As for Giyu, he fell unconscious after sustaining a head injury. He woke up after the trial ended and technically passed the test but he always wondered if he truly succeeded. As a result, he never feels worthy of being called the Water Hashira. Giyu encourages him to get training from the real Hashira, as he believes he’ll never manifest the Demon Slayer mark – although he thinks Sabito would have. Thinking of the Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku , Tanjiro knows all too well what it feels like to see the person protecting you die. He remembers his own time with Sabito, who had been his ghostly instructor during his early days of training. Tanjiro wipes away his tears and calls out a question to Giyu as he walks away: Aren’t you going to pass on what Sabito entrusted to you? The Future Giyu stops in his tracks. Suddenly, he feels the echo of a slap to the cheek Sabito once gave him. When they were young, Giyu said he wished he’d died instead of his older sister and the other boy chastised him for insulting her memory. He has to live and pass on the future she gave him, Sabito told him. Giyu had purposely forgotten that moment to avoid the pain of losing his friend. He inwardly apologizes to both of them for being so immature. As the Water Hashira is overwhelmed by the memory, Tanjiro is certain he blew it. He wracks his brain for a way to cheer him up. Oh! What about a speed-eating contest? Just as Giyu tells Tanjiro he’ll participate in the training, the young Demon Slayer blurts out an invitation to speed-eat soba noodles together. Giyu is very confused but agrees. As they eat, Giyu asks what the Insect Hashira is training them in. Back at the Butterfly Mansion, Insect Hashira Shinobu Kocho struggles to rein in her anger. Kanao stops by as she gets ready to depart for training. Shinobu won’t be training them, she tells the disappointed Kanao. But before she leaves, Shinobu wants to tell her the story of the demon who killed Kanae Kocho – and how to slay it. What’s next for Tanjiro, Giyu and the Demon Slayer Corps?
