 MAPPA Partners with K2 Pictures on Films for Global Market
Animation studio MAPPA ( JUJUTSU KAISEN , Chainsaw Man ) will begin a partnership with K2 Pictures , a newly-launched film company based in Tokyo, to produce films for the global market, following an announcement on the company's official website . K2 Pictures was established by Japanese producer Muneyuki Kii ( Rebuild of Evangelion , Shin Kamen Rider ), a former head producer at Toei. The company's official website describes its purpose as follows: The company aims to create a new funding ecosystem for Japanese films to enrich local productions by returning profits traditionally accruing to film companies to both investors and creators, and it will also produce projects with emerging and established creators. Additionally, as part of the initiative, K2 Pictures is launching a new content fund – K2P Film Fund I – which will provide support for Japanese features across both animation and live-action and will enable investors, creators and crew members to profit from the Japanese film industry. The Fund is aiming to collaborate with from investors in Japan, Asia, the US and globally. MAPPA commented on the partnership with K2 Pictures, “We participated in this project because we want to support K2 Pictures in their challenge. We are also looking forward to working with them as a partner in film production, while considering what we can do as an animation studio to the best of our ability.” Other Japanese directors and creators with whom K2 Pictures has partnered include: Hirokazu Kore-eda ( Shoplifters ) Shunji Iwai ( Love Letter ) Miwa Nishikawa ( Sway ) Takashi Miike ( 13 Assassins ) Kazuya Shiraishi ( The Devil’s Path ) K2 Pictures will host a presentation to explain the fund and the company's vision at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, with the panel hosted at the JW Marriott on May 18 at 12:45pm. Miwa Nishikawa and Takashi Miike will join the presentation along with K2 Pictures' CEO Muneyuki Kii, and a new director who will be making his/her directorial debut will also be announced.
