🍀Review:

When it comes to plot twists, you might think of anime/manga like "The Promised Neverland" which kinda took over the week community with its amazing first season.

Well, in this post I'll be discussing what this awesome show did wrong with its plot twist in its first episode, and recommend an amazing, underrated anime that did everything right with its first episode and its plot twist.

When talking about plot twists, the shock factor plays an important part. A good plot twist should take you by surprise; and even though The Promised Neverland had a really great first episode, you wouldn't be taken aback by the plot twist in the first episode, since the episode starts with ominous vibes and you know that something is extremely wrong with the setting.

Now let's talk about "Gakkou Gurashi", also known as "School Live". Warning: this anime is to be experienced without any spoilers, so if you're interested in watching this, I recommend you stop right here and check out the first episode.

Alright. Let's begin. Gakkou Gurashi starts like any other moe anime, with cute girls doing cute things, and gradually, the show throws in extremely small details, like a faded message on a blackboard, or putting a freaking grave in the background for a slight second, or having one of the characters act oddly around our main protagonist, almost acting like she's scared of her.

Well, a normal person watching the anime wouldn't be able to find these details in their first time watching, and only on your rewatch you'll be able to recognize the signs hinting towards that amazing, heart-stopping reveal in the first episode that sends chills in every inch of your body. Well, guess what? Everyone in this anime is dead and were dealing with a zombie apocalypse and our main protagonist is a freaking nut-case. I couldn't have made this up even if I tried.

So the thing is, the main protagonist went crazy after not being able to deal with her situation so she keeps acting as if everything is fine, talking to her other classmates (of course they're all imaginary and the whole classroom is covered by blood and glass from shattered windows). We, as the viewers, follow from her perspective until the final minutes of the first episode, when another survivor (the girl that acts weird) finds the main character talking to herself, and it's just so creepy to finally realize that everything you've been watching was the creation of the mind of an insane person in the state of denial. I find this plot twist may be the best plot twist in the history of anime because it genuinely scares the crap out of you since you don't really expect that extremely terrifying and huge tone shift from a more cute anime to a creepy psychological horror.

The opening of the first episode is cute and not in any way sus, but from the second episode, the op changes. Now that we know the truth about the situation, we can see zombies wandering around the school and the school itself is completely wrecked. And yeah, remember the psycho main character? In the op, everything around her is wrecked but in her silhouette, everything is fine, just like how we see episode one from her perspective. All in all, this anime is definitely something you wouldn't wanna miss, especially if you're a fan of psychological animes.

This series was adapted from a manga series that finished a couple of years ago, but a sub-series related to this series is still being made, so the whole series is still ongoing. Hope you have fun with this show. And see you at the next review.
