Year in Review: Our Favorite Anime, Moments & More From 2024
2025 is right around the corner, and with it comes a brand new year of anime that'll surely fill our "totally caught up on everything" queue. Okay, saying we're caught up on our anime queue is a lie, but the part about new anime headed our way is true! Before we return to the world of Solo Leveling , The Apothecary Diaries and Toilet-bound Hanako-kun , let's look back on the anime we watched, and loved, in 2024! RELATED: Check Out Your Anime Year in Review with the 2024 Crunchyroll Arc OVERVIEW Favorite Anime of 2024 Favorite Anime Moments of 2024 More Honorable Mentions Crunchyroll News Favorite Anime of 2024 A Sign of Affection “ A Sign of Affection is my anime of the year because of its heartfelt storytelling, beautifully crafted characters and unique portrayal of a romantic relationship that transcends barriers. The series captured the emotional depth and authenticity of Yuki and Itsuomi's connection, showing how love can bridge even the widest gaps in communication. Its gentle pacing and visually stunning animation brought a sense of warmth and intimacy to every scene, while the nuanced representation of Yuki's hearing impairment added a layer of realism and inclusivity rarely seen in anime. A Sign of Affection wasn’t just a story about falling in love, it was about understanding, growth and the universal desire to connect with others. Watching it was a deeply moving experience that left a lasting impression on my heart.” - Melanie Höpfler , Sr. Editor EMEA RELATED: The Shojo Renaissance From Fruits Basket to A Sign of Affection Honorable Mentions Briana Lawrence , Sr. Features Editor Tony Cocking , Sr. Contributing Writer/Late To The Party Columnist Deanna Nguyen , Sr. Contributing Writer Adam Wescott , Contributing Writer Haley Whisennand , Sr. Manager, Global Social Media Strategy Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian “It warms my heart to see a romance anime like this. A delightful mix of comedy, drama and awkward moments, all with a cohesive narrative and intrigue related to some mysteries in the past. This series did not put a foot wrong.” - Alex Lebl , Title Marketing Manager & Retired Mosher Black Butler -Public School Arc- RELATED: What Would You Like Black Butler’s Sebastian to Do for You? “I have to give a shout-out to the return of Black Butler . I really did miss that hell of a butler and the lengths Ciel takes to get the job done. Casually setting fire to a building is WILD behavior, and don’t get me started on the cricket match or the poor soul who thought he could out-petty a Phantomhive (sorry Maurice). Really happy to see this series make a comeback!” - Briana Lawrence , Sr. Features Editor Honorable Mentions Aly , Social Coordinator Brave Bang Bravern! RELATED: 11 Anime That Completely Outdo Themselves “The very first anime I started watching in January this year was Brave Bang Bravern! and absolutely nothing has been able to top that experience. This old-school-style mecha anime goes way, WAY over-the-top in every manner conceivable. It is hands-down the most fun I've had sitting down and watching an anime all year.” - Kathleen Townsend , Sr. Contributing Writer Honorable Mentions Samir Fraiha , Sr. Portuguese Contributing Writer Adam Wescott , Contributing Writer DAN DA DAN “Frenetic, kinetic, and downright unmissable. The brilliant way in which Science SARU has brought DAN DA DAN to life has to be commended. In the moments where it visually diverges from the manga, it absolutely nails those directorial choices. For it to be stylistically unique from the source material while still ultimately remaining faithful is a true accomplishment.” - Tony Cocking , Sr. Contributing Writer/Late To The Party Columnist “Somehow Science SARU managed to harness the energy of one of my favorite ongoing series. It's a minor miracle and I couldn't be happier with the results.” - Joseph Luster , Sr. Editor EN News “ DAN DA DAN for its hilarious and expressive voice acting, its vibrant and nuanced characters, and its strikingly resonant themes of finding companionship through the absurd and learning how to approach others.” - Callie Cadorniga , Contributing Writer RELATED: The Best Works of Science SARU “Simply the best anime IN YEARS! Animation, acting, story, directing, music. Everything is so perfect!” - Julio Velez , Spanish News Editor “In 2024 many anime caught me off guard, but if I have to pick only one of them it's DAN DA DAN . The setting is totally bonkers and the characters are lovely. The animation is top-notch, as is the music of the series. Every time I watch a new episode I have no idea what I'm going to dive into. Last but not least, each episode begins with “Otonoke” by Creepy Nuts!” - Francesco , Italian Editor Honorable Mentions Neely Battle , Associate Social Media Manager, eCommerce Mohamed Mir , French Editor Kelly Knox , Sr. Contributing Writer/Cozy Anime Corner Columnist Amilcar Trejo-Mosquera , Spanish Editor Briana Lawrence , Sr. Features Editor Nicholas Friedman , Publisher, Crunchyroll News Melanie Höpfler , Sr. Editor EMEA Delicious in Dungeon Image via Netflix “While the flood of fantasy and isekai shows in the anime sphere has become overwhelming to many (as has the prospect of trying to keep the two genres apart), there are still shining beacons of excellence from those categories that continue to leave their mark on the medium. While we did get fantastic sequels to great isekai this year with shows like KONOSUBA -God's blessing on this wonderful world! and Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- , one entry from the fantasy genre stood out with its meticulous worldbuilding that made its setting feel alive despite being contained to just a single dungeon. Delicious in Dungeon's incredibly well thought out layers and ecological systems gave the flora and fauna we encounter in mythologically inspired videogames every day a fresh breath of air. Its creative new twists on well-worn monsters and traps alone make it worth a watch. The sheer genius of how Ryoko Kui came up with a credible yet surprising way on how to eat a set of armor makes the show worth checking out. Oh, and also Magdalena Höfner's fantastic performance as Marcille in the show's German dub deserves checking out even if you are unfamiliar with the language. Her delivery as the show's straight man slowly dissolving within her comrades' nonchalant culinary madness adds an entirely new layer of enjoyment worth checking out.” - René Kayser , Audience Development Operations Manager, EMEA Honorable Mentions Tony Cocking , Sr. Contributing Writer/Late To The Party Columnist Adam Wescott , Contributing Writer Briana Lawrence , Sr. Features Editor Nicholas Friedman , Publisher, Crunchyroll News Callie Cadorniga , Contributing Writer Kathleen Townsend , Sr. Contributing Writer Dragon Ball DAIMA RELATED: Dragon Ball Quiz: Are You a Dragon Ball Expert? “I'm a Dragon Ball fan so I might be biased if I say Dragon Ball DAIMA , but how can I not? As a kid, I never imagined I could see two new series come to life and be able to work on the show (in a way). Great pacing, great story and great visuals.” - Mohamed Mir , French Editor Honorable Mentions Julio Velez , Spanish News Editor José Sassi , Sr. Editor, LATAM Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End RELATED: What Watching Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Showed Me About My Grief “Last year I reluctantly only gave it an honorable mention. Luckily Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End was long enough to have 12 whole episodes this year, and precisely the ones where the stakes were higher. What more can be said about this absolute masterpiece of an anime? This show knows how to pull at our heartstrings but also how to up the ante and get us hyped with some incredibly animated fight scenes. If you haven’t had the pleasure yet, do yourself a solid, and watch Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End , you’ll end up completely in love.” - Amilcar Trejo-Mosquera , Spanish Editor “ Frieren: Beyond Journey's End continued to blow my mind through the winter season. No further notes. The series just rocks.” - Aly , Social Coordinator Honorable Mentions Nicholas Friedman , Publisher, Crunchyroll News Girls Band Cry “Although I initially passed on the series, I eventually decided to give it a chance after hearing so much buzz about it. From the moment I started watching Girls Band Cry I was hooked by the incredible cast of characters, their dynamic chemistry and the fantastic music. Without giving away any spoilers, the show explores the various struggles the girls face, and through their music, they channel their emotions and frustrations in powerful, cathartic ways.” - Cary Cruz , Graphic Designer Honorable Mentions Adam Wescott , Contributing Writer Kaiju No. 8 “ Kaiju No. 8 got me with No. 8's design, but also with the simple fact that our hero is not another over-cheated teenage protagonist. This anime has this very positive message about following your dreams in your thirties and that's only the beginning of why I like it so much.” - Mohamed Mir , French Editor RELATED: Which Kaiju No. 8 Character Are You Most Like? “ Kaiju No. 8 won 2024 for me, and the main reason why is named Kafka Hibino! He's sweet, he works hard to chase his dream, and he's 32 years old — an old man in anime years! Then there's the imaginative worldbuilding and the well-developed supporting cast like Hoshina and Kikoru. I can't wait for the next season.” - Kelly Knox , Sr. Contributing Writer/Cozy Anime Corner Columnist Honorable Mentions Amilcar Trejo-Mosquera , Spanish Editor Alex Lebl , Title Marketing Manager & Retired Mosher Joseph Luster , Sr. Editor EN News Briana Lawrence , Sr. Features Editor Look Back Image via Amazon Prime RELATED: Look Back Director Kiyotaka Oshiyama on the Creative Expressions From Tatsuki Fujimoto's One-Shot “ Look Back isn't just a great adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto's already excellent one-shot comic. It’s director Kiyotaka Oshiyama's chance to shine on the world stage. He directed and storyboarded the film, handled animation direction, drew the character designs, and even did a significant amount of the animation all by himself. The quirks and imperfections of the final work only further strengthen the theme.” - Adam Wescott , Contributing Writer Honorable Mentions Briana Lawrence , Sr. Features Editor Callie Cadorniga , Contributing Writer Mr. Villain's Day Off RELATED: Mr. Villain’s Day Off Has Brought Us Anime’s New Perfect Man “This was one of the most comforting, soul-healing shows I've ever watched. Think comfort food in anime form. I felt any daily stress melt away as I was watching the General enjoy his days off.” - Neely Battle , Associate Social Media Manager, eCommerce Honorable Mentions Briana Lawrence , Sr. Features Editor My Deer Friend Nokotan RELATED: My Deer Friend Nokotan is the Summer’s Perfect Anime to Detach From Reality “Watching an anime like My Deer Friend Nokotan and not having it as my favorite of the year seems impossible. Seeing Nokotan, Koshitan and Bashame just being themselves in the Deer Club — having fun with friends (and competing in wild, elaborate games) at Metropolitan Hinominami High School — made it the perfect way to wrap up my nights.” - José Sassi , Sr. Editor, LATAM My Hero Academia Season 7 RELATED: How My Hero Academia Highlights the Humanity of its Villains “There's a lot of moments I was looking forward to seeing in this newest season of My Hero Academia and they did not disappoint. The forever evolving layers of Dabi's story. Toga finally being understood by someone. Bakugo's big (heartbreaking) moment. It's been an incredibly emotional ride.” - Briana Lawrence , Sr. Features Editor Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin “To tell you the truth, my expectations for this anime weren't really high, but as the series progressed I found myself more and more invested in the characters, their dilemma in cultivate rice in such a poor situation and all the trouble they faced. Sakuna and all the supporting characters really grow and mature, and I really cried when some sacrifices had to be made. Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is far more than just an adaptation of a video game, trust me.” - Samir Fraiha , Sr. Portuguese Contributing Writer SHOSHIMIN: How to become Ordinary RELATED: SHOSHIMIN: How to become Ordinary Has a Rather Unordinary Twist “It's no surprise that I love hidden gems and I was genuinely impressed by this show. Considering it's from the same author as Hyouka , which is another favorite anime of mine, it was a given that it'd climb up to the top for me this year. From the cinematography to the unordinary, season-finale twist, SHOSHIMIN: How to become Ordinary has been one of the more unique anime that came out in 2024 (and I'm SO happy it'll continue with Season 2!).” - Deanna Nguyen , Sr. Contributing Writer “As a big fan of Hyouka , it was nice to see another of the author's works get adapted into an anime. This has all the mystery vibes that you'd want, and I really loved the cinematography that was used when Jogoro was figuring out what was actually happening. Real curious to see where things go in season 2.” - Jared Clemons , Contributing Writer Solo Leveling RELATED: What's Your Solo Leveling Hunter Class? “ Solo Leveling got me hooked because of how intense the evolution of Jinwoo is and how well thought out the whole show is. I was so impressed with it that I started reading the manhwa and am now caught up.” - Mohamed Mir , French Editor Honorable Mentions Amilcar Trejo-Mosquera , Spanish Editor Alex Lebl , Title Marketing Manager & Retired Mosher Joseph Luster , Sr. Editor EN News Briana Lawrence , Sr. Features Editor The Apothecary Diaries “I'm assuming everyone else already picked DAN DA DAN (I'm writing this from the past since I'm on paternity leave right now), so allow me to gush about the incredible journey that is The Apothecary Diaries . The story follows Maomao, who quickly finds herself a food taster for one of the Emperor's wives. You might be thinking, "Oh no, poison!" but Maomao was thinking "Hell yeah, poison!" because she loves studying the effects of poisons and medicines on the body. And so she becomes incredibly trusted and highly valuable to the estate as she solves crimes and cures ailments. But amidst this medical, monster-of-the-week mystery is a budding will-they-won't-they romantic comedy story that is just a joy to watch develop. It also has one of the most moving sequences in anime in recent memory. I'll let you figure out which one. I cannot wait to see what is in store when this series returns.” - Nicholas Friedman , Publisher, Crunchyroll News Twilight Out of Focus RELATED: What’s Your Role in the Twilight Out of Focus Film Club? “I’ve been reading the Twilight Out of Focus manga so I was excited to see it adapted into an anime. I loved seeing the three different couples navigate their feelings both as couples and individuals. We don’t get a whole lot of anime like this so I’m always happy to see one that’s available subbed AND dubbed. Also? The nods to film both in the references and conversations about it were great.” - Briana Lawrence , Sr. Features Editor YATAGARASU: The Raven Does Not Choose Its Master “The series is based on excellent source material but that isn't enough to ensure a good anime. What takes YATAGARASU: The Raven Does Not Choose Its Master over the top is its craftsmanship, which always rises to the occasion. I was also impressed by how seamlessly the staff merged the first two novels into the initial story arc. While I don't know how commercially successful the series was, I can say that every person to which I've introduced the show has adored it.” - Adam Wescott , Contributing Writer “I love a good historical fantasy series, and this combines that with some great mystery elements that had me guessing throughout the entire series. Some of the reveals that happen later in the series were really fresh and surprising in a way that made me feel really intrigued and happy that I watched the series. The personalities and motivations of all the characters feel really well developed, and the relationships between all the characters is constantly developing. It's not an action-heavy show, but well worth the watch for anyone who's looking for a great character drama.” - Haley Whisennand , Sr. Manager, Global Social Media Strategy Crunchyroll News Favorite Anime Moments of 2024 A Sign of Affection RELATED: Which Winter 2024 Romance Anime Should You Watch for Valentine’s Day? “When Shin finally confessed his feelings to Emma. After so many torturous years of unrequited love, the moment he admitted the truth was quiet, sweet and well deserved.” - Tony Cocking , Sr. Contributing Writer/Late To The Party Columnist “Itsuomi learning sign language to talk to Yuki is one of the biggest green flags for anime in 2024. Him wanting to ask her important questions in her own language put the biggest smile on my face.” - Briana Lawrence , Sr. Features Editor Ace of the Diamond RELATED: Ace of the Diamond act II Anime Sequel Announced “I know this isn’t exactly the question, but my favorite moment was the announcement of the Ace of the Diamond sequel. I’ve been waiting for years for this peak anime to make its comeback, and hearing the news was an absolute dream come true!” - Melanie Höpfler , Sr. Editor EMEA Brave Bang Bravern! “The scene where Lulu tears off her jacket, revealing that she is wearing a shirt that says "I Love Robots!" - Adam Wescott , Contributing Writer BLUE LOCK Season 2 RELATED: Let’s Compare BLUE LOCK Characters to Real Soccer Stars “Nagi's goal vs. the Japan U20 team in BLUE LOCK . GOOOOOOOOOLAZO!” - Alex Lebl , Title Marketing Manager & Retired Mosher BUCCHIGIRI?! “Any interaction between Arajin and Marito.” - Mohamed Mir , French Editor DAN DA DAN RELATED: DAN DA DAN Anime Staff on Drawing Upon the Rhythm of the Supernatural Series “Can the entire opening be called an anime moment? DAN DA DAN's opening sets the stage for the series with an infinitely rewatchable credits sequence that oozes style and gets stuck in your head for days. I must have watched it five times before the anime even premiered.” - Kelly Knox , Sr. Contributing Writer/Cozy Anime Corner Columnist “All of those delicious slice of life moments in episode 5 of DAN DA DAN .” - Julio Velez , Spanish News Editor “Having lost my mother in 2022, I felt an overwhelming sense of warmth and comfort from Acrobatic Silky's tragic origins and emotional catharsis.” - Callie Cadorniga , Contributing Writer “Echoing Callie’s sentiments on this. As I write this it’s coming up on the first year without my dad, who died around Christmas in 2023. Parental loss is hard to describe, and my feelings waffle between being sad, being mad, feeling numb, having warm memories, or having really vivid dreams where he’s still here. I remember, when planning his funeral, of wanting to focus on the happy times, so seeing Aira hug Acrobatic Silky and give her that last embrace she needed hit home for me, especially since Aira lost a parent, too.” - Briana Lawrence , Sr. Features Editor Detective Conan: The Million-Dollar Pentagram “While one half of Detective Conan consists of its whodunnits, its other main appeal for over 30 years at this stage has been its many romance plots with their 'Will they, won't they' appeal. I don’t want to spoil too much here, but there’s a great moment in Detective Conan: The Million-Dollar Pentagram in this regard... until after the credits. Sharing that moment with other big-time Conan fans in the theater was a pure moment of joy, even with the retcon – but hey, this is an anime franchise movie, so it having to be of no consequence was to be expected, I guess. Even so, I do envy the blissful ignorance of everyone who left the movie during the credits.” - René Kayser , Audience Development Operations Manager, EMEA Demon Slayer: Kimtesu no Yaiba - Hashira Training Arc- RELATED: The Ultimate Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Watch Order “It'd have to be when the Demon Slayers and Hashiras fall into Muzen's Infinity Castle. There's so much intensity and uncertainty for what's to come (I'm anime-only). I'm so excited for the next arc.” - Deanna Nguyen , Sr. Contributing Writer Kaiju No. 8 RELATED: Kaiju No. 8 English Dub Cast on How the Series Encourages Older Anime Fans “I'll probably go with the Parasite Kaiju saying he found Kafka and forced its way into his mouth. Kafka’s reaction is just priceless.” - Mohamed Mir , French Editor “Not knowing what to expect from Kaiju No. 8 , I expected Kafka to be extremely serious once he became the very thing he was trying to eliminate. Then he freaks out in Kaiju form. That entire sequence is great because it shows us that Kafka is still Kafka.” - Briana Lawrence , Sr. Features Editor MASHLE: MAGIC AND MUSCLES Season 2 RELATED: Creepy Nuts on Their First Concert in New York City, How They Make Unique Music and More “Seeing EVERYONE on social media doing the dance from the MASHLE: MAGIC AND MUSCLES Season 2 opening left a massive impression on me this year. It was one of those times when anime just became SO prevalent in mainstream culture. It made me sit back and think 'Dang, anime's really made it!' - Haley Whisennand , Sr. Manager, Global Social Media Strategy Ranma 1/2 Image via Netflix “Shampoo breaks a wall and makes her debut in the series.” - Francesco , Italian Editor Solo Leveling RELATED: Tips & Tricks to Surviving a Dungeon in Solo Leveling “My favorite anime moment is probably when Jinwoo 'sacrificed' himself in the first dungeon. Honestly, his misery throughout the whole series is my guilty pleasure, haha.” - Melanie Höpfler , Sr. Editor EMEA “When Solo Leveling was first announced I KNEW this was the moment that would definitely make this show memorable. After that amazing fight between Igris and Sung Jinwoo, seeing him ordering the fallen Knight to follow his command was the perfect send-off to Season 1 and a great cliffhanger to get us hyped for Season 2.” - Amilcar Trejo-Mosquera , Spanish Editor Sound! Euphonium Season 3 RELATED: Which Instrument Would You Play in a Sound! Euphonium Concert Band? “Both Kumiko and Reina want to perform together and win the gold in their last year, but they also honor their promise to select the best musicians, even if it means not choosing each other. The scene resonated with me as a competitor— the frustration of loss and unfulfilled dreams, yet the bond between them remains strong despite the hardships.” - Cary Cruz , Graphic Designer The Apothecary Diaries “Any of Maomao's moments in The Apothecary Diaries when she gets to enjoy poison.” - Mohamed Mir , French Editor Train to the End of the World RELATED: The Many Missed Connections of Train to the End of the World “The eighth episode of Train to the End of the World has the girl encounter a bizarre, mixed-up world themed after Alice in Wonderland , the Wizard of Oz and shogi. It’s truly one of the weirdest sequences I think I've ever encountered in Japanese anime.” - Adam Wescott, Contributing Writer Twilight Out of Focus RELATED: Twilight Out of Focus, Coming Out and Finding Your Space “Hisashi coming out to Mao in Twilight Out of Focus was such a short, but meaningful moment, and the commentary on how ridiculous it is to assume that gay people mindlessly go after people they're interested in like zombies was top-notch. Mao’s easy acceptance (and confusion when hearing the generalizations people make about the queer community) was great, both for Hisashi and for the audience watching.” - Briana Lawrence , Sr. Features Editor WIND BREAKER RELATED: WIND BREAKER is an Ode to How Much We Love Delinquents “Finding out that Sakura can't handle any sort of compliment won me over. Sakura comes off as a tough-as-nails outcast who’s just looking for a good fight, but it doesn’t take long to realize he’s a big ol’ softy who needs to be around people who understand him. That's not much of a surprise if you speak anime deliquent, but Sakura REALLY can't deal with any sort of praise, even if he deserves it” - Briana Lawrence , Sr. Features Editor "Finding out that Umemiya is Gojo, they have the same Japanese voice actor." - Melanie Höpfler , Sr. Editor EMEA Wistoria: Wand and Sword “Will vs Julius in Wistoria: Wand and Sword Episode 7. This was the "Rock Lee vs Gaara" fight from Naruto in the the recent years of anime. Wistoria: Wand and Sword's animation is already top-notch, but in this sequence the animators went far beyond.” - Samir Fraiha , Sr. Portuguese Contributing Writer YATAGARASU: The Raven Does Not Choose Its Master “The big turn.
