Three Real Asteroids Named After Asteroids in Love Manga
COIAS (Come On! Impacting ASteroids) is a web application developed to facilitate collaboration between researchers and the general public and students in the search for asteroids and other undiscovered celestial objects based on images taken by the Subaru Telescope. The name, pronounced "Koiasu," was taken from the abbreviation of Quro's slice-of-life manga Asteroids in Love ( Koisuru Asteroid in Japan), which centers on high school girls who dream of finding asteroids. The names of three new asteroids found by the citizen participation project using the app were named after the manga. The three are located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. The first one, “Ao,” was proposed by the discoverers, based on the name of the protagonist, Ao Manaka, and was approved by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in September. And the other two were also approved in November: "Quro," from the name of the manga author, and "Hoshizaki," from Hoshizaki High School, where the story takes place. The manga author Quro said on X (formerly Twitter) : "Following 'Ao,' the naming of the asteroids 'Hoshizaki' and 'Quro' has been approved. Congratulations to the discoverers and the COIAS development team! Especially about 'Quro,', I wonder if it is really okay...really? I am still very nervous. Thank you very much to all the discoverers who suggested it. I am honored beyond measure. I can't sleep with my feet turned in space..."
