The Australian trio have exploded over the past few years, and have taken that popularity to new heights with their latest release, LOST IN HEAVEN , charting across the world. The more astute Chase Atlantic fans have probably noticed that anime permeates into their music on a regular basis, almost like an additional instrument within the songs. With songs like “Consume” directly referencing Tokyo Ghoul , to the way the band dresses, to their electric live shows, it’s clear that everyone’s favorite medium is lurking in their brains at all times. Vocalist Mitchel Cave was nice enough to tell me all about the story behind “Consume” and more about their new album! RELATED: The Black Dahlia Murder: Anime Has Always Been Cool Can you tell me a little about your anime journey? How it started and where you are now? What is your favorite anime series or movie of all time? Mitchel Cave : As a child I first watched Spirited Away but my love for anime truly began as a teenager after watching Tokyo Ghoul . My journey has taken me to the point where I have the River Spirit from Studio Ghibli tattooed on me. My favorite anime series is Parasyte . If I had to recommend anime to anyone, I would recommend watching Parasyte because it’s an easy watch through. Did you get into music around the same time as you got into anime? Were they separate interests for you or did one inform the other? Cave : They were separate interests but they did end up synchronizing by the time I really got into anime and producing around the same time. RELATED: RJ Pasin on the Fulfillment of Hearing His Music in Anime Fan Edits Tell me a bit about your new album, LOST IN HEAVEN ! Is there anything new you tried on this album that you haven’t done before? Was anime a big part of the studio experience at all? Do you find your interest in anime influences your approach to songwriting or lyrics? Cave : Expressing vulnerability, as well as discovering new production techniques that helped to elevate the overall sound of LOST IN HEAVEN . Conceptually, the album revolves around our very own original anime lore. So far, we created two characters named AURA and VOID, who represent both light and dark, that comes with the human experience. Our first album consisted of a song titled “Consume,” which was inspired and based off of Kaneki from Tokyo Ghoul . Anime was a huge inspiration not only for the songwriting aspect but also for the production and chord progressions to the instrumentals themselves. What do you think it is about your style of music that draws anime fans to it? Cave : The fact that quite a lot of the music is drawn from various different anime series. I think innately fans are able to subconsciously be attracted to the theatrics and depths of the productions. We use quite a few chord progressions and production techniques that are popular amongst Japanese culture and the emotions that come with it. Each song is like a new episode or chapter from our lives. RELATED: Heavy Metal Band Bloodywood on Working with Babymetal and Anime Fandom in India Who are some of your musical inspirations? Have you learned or been inspired by any anime openings, endings, or OSTs? Cave : We’ve definitely been inspired by a few anime soundtracks and scorings, as well as just the overall visual aspect, which we translate over to musical form. Fullmetal Alchemist , Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba , Parasyte , Death Note , My Hero Academia , etc., to name a few! If any of your songs could be used in an anime, which song would you want and what type of show would it be? If any character from any anime or manga you’ve watched/read could join Chase Atlantic, who would you like it to be and what would they do in the band? Cave : LOST IN HEAVEN has a song titled, “DEMON TIME” which was directly inspired by Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba , as well as the lyrical content making references to characters in the shows themselves. It would be a dream come true to have our music sync’d with not only Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba but any of the previously mentioned series. I feel like our music would work with any of them. Inosuke looks like he’d rip a killer solo on a double neck V guitar, in the same manner that he could take down demons with his dual blades. Cave : The fact that we’re able to draw inspiration from a wide variety of different cultures from all over the world and fuse them into our own unique expressions of art. Image Credit: Jordan Knight Have you encountered many other anime fans in other bands? Do your fans know about your anime fandom? And if so, have you observed your fans overall getting more into anime? Cave : Absolutely. There’s no denying or hiding our love for anime, I think all of our listeners have noticed that. We’ve probably inadvertently encouraged people who are fans of our music to also explore anime.
