Miyazaki's The Boy and the Heron Anime Film Wins 2 Annie Awards
January saw the nominee reveals for the 51st Annie Awards, with Makoto Shinkai's Suzume and Hayao Miyazaki's The Boy and the Heron tying with seven nominations each, including Best Feature. While neither took home the biggest award, Miyazaki's film managed to win a pair of honors in the process. The Boy and the Heron won awards in the Best Storyboarding - Feature and Best Character Animation - Feature categories. Best Feature went to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse , which won seven awards total. Special preview screenings kicked off in New York City and Los Angeles on November 22 ahead of the film's nationwide premiere on December 8. Crunchyroll released the film in Australia and New Zealand on December 7, 2023, and describes The Boy and the Heron as: A young boy named Mahito yearning for his mother ventures into a world shared by the living and the dead. There, death comes to an end, and life finds a new beginning. A semi-autobiographical fantasy about life, death, and creation, in tribute to friendship, from the mind of Hayao Miyazaki.
