Ghibli Producer Toshio Suzuki Talks The Boy and the Heron, the Future of Animation in New Video
Following up on all the awards buzz—including a Golden Globe win and nomination for Best Animated Feature at the 2024 Academy Awards—Hayao Miyazaki's The Boy and the Heron anime film is in the spotlight again thanks to an interview GKIDS shared. This one has Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki discussing the acclaimed feature, from the origins of the heron at the heart of it to its semi-autobiographical nature, its reception around the world, the future of hand-drawn animation and more. RELATED: The Boy and the Heron Awarded Golden Globe for Best Animated Film The Boy and the Heron was released in Japanese theaters on July 14, 2023, with its international premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, and its initial U.S. premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 29. Special preview screenings kicked off in New York City and Los Angeles on November 22 ahead of the film's nationwide premiere on December 8. Crunchyroll released the film in Australia and New Zealand on December 7, 2023, and describes The Boy and the Heron as: A young boy named Mahito yearning for his mother ventures into a world shared by the living and the dead. There, death comes to an end, and life finds a new beginning. A semi-autobiographical fantasy about life, death, and creation, in tribute to friendship, from the mind of Hayao Miyazaki.
