Image via Nippon.com According to a post by his family on social media, actor Kenpachiro Satsuma (born Yasuaki Maeda) passed away of interstitial pneumonia on December 16, 2023, after falling ill in November. Satsuma was 76 years old. Satsuma was born in Kagoshima Prefecture on May 27, 1947. After working in a steel mill in 1965, he joined the Nikkatsu Acting Institute in 1967 and began appearing in films under such stage names Ryoma Kusaka and Kengo Nakayama. Satsuma is best remembered as a monster suit actor for Toho films such as 1971's Godzilla vs. Hedorah (in the role of Hedorah), 1972's Godzilla vs. Gigan (in the role of Gigan), and for portraying Godzilla during the Heisei film period from 1984's Return of Godzilla through 1995's Godzilla vs. Destroyah .
