Japanese singer-songwriter Gen Hoshino released his first new double A-side CD single in two and a half years, "Why / Life" ( Hikari no Ato / Seimeitai in Japan) on December 27, 2023. Details of one of the two title tunes, "Why," were not revealed until just before its release, and on December 22 , it was announced that the song is featured as the SPY x FAMILY CODE: White anime feature film ending theme. "Why" is Hoshino's second song for the SPX x FAMILY anime franchise, following his sixth digital single song, "Comedy" ( Kigeki in Japan), used as the first ending theme for the TV anime in 2022. The CD single ranked second in Oricon's daily single charts on its first day, and on its release day in Japan, Hoshino's official YouTube channel started streaming the song's music video. The video was directed by visual creator Kyotaro Hayashi, who worked on three of Hoshino's previous music videos — "Pop Virus" (2018), "Ain't Nobody Know" (2020), and "Fushigi" (2021).
