Suzume Becomes First Japanese Film Ever to Enter South Korea’s All-Time Top 100 Box Office

 

It is undeniable that Suzume is a worldwide success, especially in Asia where it has made most of its global box office gross. Through its historical run, it has smashed records in many countries, including South Korea, where today the Korean Film Council announced today that Suzume has become the first Japanese film ever to enter into its domestic top 100 most-attended films of all time, overtaking the 99th place from 2013’s Cold Eyes.

 

In South Korea, the top 100 films are based on attendance rather than box office gross.

 

Suzume director Makoto Shinkai thanked fans on his Twitter account, writing in English “Thank you all Korean fans for your enthusiastic support!"

According to the Korean Film Council, as of June 4, 5,514,465 people have seen Suzume in South Korean theaters, for a box office gross of US$43,265,860, the third highest gross for the film worldwide after China and Japan. Despite finishing up in theaters in Japan, Suzume continues its theatrical run in South Korea.

 

Suzume was released in Japan on November 11, becoming the eighth-highest-grossing anime film in the region and the fourth-highest-grossing worldwide. Crunchyroll teamed up with Sony Pictures, Wild Bunch International and Eurozoom to bring the feature to global audiences outside of Asia starting April 12, 2023.
