Tokyo International Film Festival 2022 Unveils Japanese Animation Film Lineup

 

 

The 35th Tokyo International Film Festival held a press conference on September 21, at the Hibiya Mitsui Conference Hall in Tokyo to announce its screening lineup. This year's event will be held from October 24 to November 2, 2022, at theaters and halls in the Hibiya, Yuraku-cho, Marunouchi, and Ginza areas of Tokyo.

 

 

 

 

In addition to three recent films, four Japanese anime films will be screened in a retrospective section called "Animation and Tokyo," looking at how the city has been depicted in animated works. Anime critics Ryota Fujitsu serves as the section's programming advisor. He will also moderate two seminar events, "Creating Worlds with Animation" and "Animation and Tokyo."

 

 

"Japanese Animation" Film Lineup:

 

  • "Drifting Home" (2022 / Director: Hiroyasu Ishida)
  • "The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes" (2022 / Director: Tomohisa Taguchi)
  • "Break of Dawn" (2022 / Director: Tomoyuki Kurokawa)

 

Retrospective Section "Animation and Tokyo":

 

  • "Harmagedon" (1983 / Director: Rintaro)
  • "MEGAZONE 23" (1985 / Director: Noboru Ishiguro)
  • "PATLABOR2 the Movie" (1993 / Mamoru Oshii)
  • "Sword Art Online the Movie -Ordinal Scale-" (2017 / Tomohiko Ito)

 

 

In addition, 12 select episodes of Tsuburaya Productions's classic tokusatsu drama series, Ultra Seven, will be screened in 4K format in commemoration of its 55th anniversary. Four episodes were selected, divided into three themes - "communication," "tokusatsu (special effects)," and "hero."
